Before you take this medicine
You should not use this medicine if you are allergic to it, or if you have:
severe asthma or breathing problems;
a blockage in your stomach or intestines; or
frequent asthma attacks or hyperventilation.
In some people, codeine is quickly broken down in the liver and reaches higher than normal levels in the body. This can cause dangerously slow breathing and can cause death, especially in a child.

To make sure this medicine is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have ever:
liver disease;

mental illness, drug or alcohol addiction.
Some medicines can interact with codeine and cause a serious condition called serotonin syndrome. Make sure your doctor knows if you are also taking stimulant medications, herbal products, or medications for depression, mental illness, Parkinson’s disease, migraines, serious infections, or nausea and vomiting prevention. Do not breastfeed while taking codeine. This medicine may pass into breast milk and cause drowsiness, breathing problems, or death in a nursing baby.
How should I take codeine?
Take codeine exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow all directions on your prescription label. Codeine can slow or stop your breathing. Never use this medicine in larger amounts or for longer than prescribed. Tell your doctor if the medicine also seems to stop working in relieving your pain.
Codeine can be addictive, even at normal doses. Never share this medicine with anyone else, especially someone with a history of drug abuse or addiction. Do not suddenly stop taking codeine after long-term use, or you may experience unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. Ask your doctor how to safely stop taking this medicine.
Store at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Stay on top of your medicine. Codeine is a drug of abuse and you need to know if someone is using your medicine incorrectly or without a prescription.
Do not store leftover opioid medications. Just one dose can cause death in someone who uses this medicine accidentally or incorrectly. Ask your pharmacist where you can find a drug take-back program. What happens if I miss a dose?
Since this medicine is used for pain, you are not likely to miss a dose. Skip a missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not take additional medicine to make up for the forgotten dose.
What happens if I overdose?
Seek emergency medical care or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222. An overdose of codeine can be fatal, especially in a child or other person who uses the drug without a prescription. Overdose may cause severe muscle weakness, cold and clammy skin, pinpoint pupils, very slow breathing, extreme drowsiness or coma.
What to avoid?
Don’t drink alcohol. Dangerous side effects or death may occur.
Codeine may affect your thinking or reactions . Avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how this medicine affects you. Dizziness or severe drowsiness can cause falls or other accidents.
Side effects of codeine
Seek emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction to codeine: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue or throat.
Like other narcotics, codeine can slow your breathing. Death can occur if breathing becomes too weak.
Dosage information
Usual adult dose for pain:
Initial dose: 15 to 60 mg orally every 4 hours as needed
Maximum dose: 360 mg in 24 hours
Notes:
-Initial doses should be determined individually, taking into account pain severity, response, previous experience with analgesic treatments, and risk factors for addiction, abuse and misuse.
– Doses higher than 60 mg have not been shown to improve pain relief and are associated with an increased incidence of side effects.
-Due to the risks of addiction, abuse, and misuse, the lowest effective dose should be used for the shortest duration consistent with the individual patient’s treatment goals.
